History

Nakahata-jin'ya was a daikan jin'ya, a jin'ya which was used to govern on behalf of a lord that was not present, and the commander was a hatamoto (bannerman) and direct retainer of the shōgun. This shogunal territory was governed by Matsudaira Yasuzumi who built the jin'ya in 1837 after Matsudaira Yasutaka became lord of Tanagurajō in 1836. In this way Nakahata-jin'ya was a branch fort of Tanagurajō.

Given the period of its construction in the late Edo period, Nakahata-jin'ya was likely only a lightly fortified compound, and primarily used as magisterial offices. No ruins remain on-site.

Field Notes

Nakahata-jin'ya is a jin'ya site. The Nakahata-jin'ya site itsef is now that of the Kayanoki Village Garden in Nakahata village in Yabuki Township of historical Shirakawa County. The garden was originally built for the jin'ya and contains two large kayanoki (nutmeg trees) from that time.

The shoin (drawing hall / residence) of Nakahata-jin'ya is an extant, relocated jin'ya goten (feudal lord's compound) now located in Aiźu-Wakamatsu. It is now part of a complex of structures which includes the restored mansion of the karō (chief retainer) of Aiźu Domain.
