When Yoshinobu Tokugawa entered Kishu country (Wakayama Pref.) in 1619, Tanabe-jo was built by remodeling Minato-jo with the assistant lord, Ando Naotsugu. From then on the Ando Clan served as lord of the castle until the Meiji era.
