History

Mikumo Castle was the main home castle of the Mikumo clan, one of the senior families of the 53 Koka families and a trusted ally of the Rokkaku. It was also called the 奥城 or a hidden fort of Kannonji Castle when under siege. The castle was used as a base to direct their guerrilla operations when Nobunaga attacked the Rokkaku in 1568, but was defeated by Nobunaga in 1570. Parts of the stone walls were used to build the stone walls of Minakuchi Okayama Castle.

Field Notes

The castle is quite far from the station and a long road up the mountain, but with a car you can get to one of two parking lots very close to the castle entrance. Each of the baileys around the castle seem to be designed to provide great views of a different angle of the plain, Yasu River and Tokaido Highway.
