History

The Nagata Jin'ya was founded by Ina Tadatsugu while working on flood control for the Arakawa River and building an irrigation system for the rice fields in the early 1600's after the establishment of the Tokugawa Bakufu. Ina Tadatsugu was a trusted vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu and worked as a governor for the Kanto area. You will find several Ina related sites around this area of Saitama including Ina Yashiki and Akayama Jin'ya.

After the Ina built a new castle at Akayama Jin'ya Nagata Jin'ya was maintained by Nagata Yahei Kancho, a vassal of the Ina until the end of the Edo Period. The descendants of the Nagata still live there today.

Field Notes

The Nagata Jin'ya was a surprisingly nice site. The main feature is the huge, well preserved nagayamon and pounded earth walls (tsuijibei) on either side. The original shinobi-gaeshi in the corner between the gate and wall are a nice feature too. The current gate dates to the latter Edo Period and is a Prefectural Historic Building. Three sides of the site also retain remnants of the moat so you can see the size of jin'ya too.
