Tsuda Castle (Omi)

The site of Tsudajō is now fields and a park. There are some elevated portions of land with stone retaining walls, as well as waterways which may be the remnants of moats, but no ruins can be positively identified. Whilst investigating the stone walls of the hillside terraces in the area I encounter

History

Tsudajō was at the centre of a complex of fortifications at the foot of Mount Chōmei. The castellan was Wada Genba, a vassal of the hegemonic Rokkaku Clan. Locals pride themselves on their locale being the 'ancestral home of Oda Nobunaga', since several of Oda Nobunaga's relatives took the name Tsuda after the area. A famous member of the Tsuda branch of the Oda Clan was Tsuda Nobuzumi, who was Oda Nobunaga's nephew, the son of his brother, Nobuyuki, who he killed at the Battle of Ino in the feud for headship of the Oda Clan. Tsuda Nobuzumi became castellan of Ômizojō on the opposite side of Lake Biwa, but he was married to the daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide, and so his nephew, Oda Nobutaka, Oda Nobunaga's third son, killed him out of suspicion of disloyalty after the Honnōji Incident.
