No ruins remain of Ebejō, a fortified manor hall, and the site is now that of temples and dwellings in the village of Ebe (also called Nakakita).

History

Ebejō was the fortified residence of the Ebe Clan, and the centre of the Ebe Manor. In the late Heian period the daughter of Tachibana Nagatoki, the chief priest of the Ebe Estate, was a maiko in the entourage of Taira Kiyomori, and there is a story that she lamented the lack of water in Ebe and so the powerful aristocrat built a canal from the Yasu River to bring water to the village. The Hino River is closer, however, and fed by several tributaries, including the Doji River, that run past Ebe, so I can't imagine why it was necessary to bring water from the Yasu. Anyway, the story is just a legend. It is possible that a water way existed in Ebe and was used as a moat, but there are only irrigation ditches in the village today. It's possible that the footprint of Ebejō overlapped with the later Nagaharajō, and that ruins of Ebejō were destroyed when nearby Nagaharajō was (re-)built.
