History

Chausuyamajō was a satellite fortification of Tōnoharajō built by the Tōhara Clan to protect the Aida River to the north of their main mountain castle. Chausuyamajō was located at much lower elevation on a foothill adjacent to the Aida River. It was opposite the river on the further side from another small castle, Chikuma Koya Castle. The Aida River joins the Sai River to the west shortly after passing between the two castle sites.

Field Notes

Chausu refers to a hand mill used for grinding tea, and mountains called for this tool are not uncommon in Japan (and, speaking of which, there's another one in the same historical county, listed on this site as Chausuyama Castle (Shinano) to distinguish them). The Chausuyamajō here is located in the foothills which surround Akashina, and is much further down from the tall mountains which soar beyond. Nevertheless, there was no trail to this site and the fallen leaves made climbing it difficult. There are a couple of baileys. They are overgrown with young bamboo. Not the best site but coming here allowed me to get some more views of the Koyajō castle mount.
