The site of Shimizu-yakata was excavated in 1989 so its layout is well known. Many goodies were unearthed, but no obvious ruins remain above ground. A small garden with a stele for the yakata (fortified manor hall) along with an explanation board can be found at the site today.

History

Shimizu-yakata was the fortified manor hall of the Shimizu Clan in the Kamakura and Muromachi periods. The Shimizu were vassals of the Nishina Clan. It seems the Shimizu Clan were quite an important clan and held territory throughout Aźumi County. Shimizu-yakata was a large yakata, consisting of four sections. It had both an outer moat and inner moat. The outer moat measured 124m east-west and 104m north-south. The inner moat measured 58m east-west and 48m north-south. The moats were about 5m wide. Shimizu-yakata later became the kyokan (residential area paired with a mountaintop castle) of Shimizujō. In 1501 the lord of the manor was Shimizu Moriyoshi.
