History

By tradition, founding of the castle is ascribed to Nakajima Naizen, who apparently had a residence here. Nakajimajō was likely just a small fort used as a look-out, and to watch traffic through the mountain roads. Smoke signals may have been sent from the fort. Although it is gone now, there was a shrine to Akiba on the hilltop here. Akiba is a deity related to fire, and therefore was called upon at such forts where smoke signals were often sent.

Field Notes

Nakajimajō is a yamajiro (mountaintop castle) ruin in Ikeda Township, North Azumi County. It is a single bailey fort complex with an incomplete ring of terraced lower bailey space beneath the main bailey. There may be some other sculpting of the mountainside here and there, but impressions are indistinct.
