Ogi Castle (Nukata)

Ogijō is a former castle site in Kōta Township, Nukata County. Ruins of the castle in the form of earthworks existed into modern times, but were levelled in the early Shōwa period, and the site is now just rice padies. A stele commemorating the castle stands as a sole reminder of the site's history.

History

Ogijō was built in 1460 as the fortified residence of the Naitō Clan who had migrated from Kyōto. During the Mikkawa Ikkō-Ikki Revolt, Naitō Kiyonaga and his son, Ienaga, found themselves on opposing sides of the conflict. Ienaga supported the victorious Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Kiyonaga was put under house arrest at Ogijō, though he died shortly after in 1564. Ienaga was killed at the battle of Fushimi in 1600. The ruins of the castle were destroyed in the first half of the 20th century.
