History
The first castle was built by the Sasaki clan during the Nanbokuchô period, but there isn't much information. In 1508, Ashikaga Yoshizumi, 11th shôgun, fled Kyôto and took refuge here under the Kuri clan. In 1510, the castle was besieged by 3000 troops but repelled the attack. In 1511, Yoshiharu, 12th shôgun, was born here and Yoshizumi died of illness. In 1520, the castle fell by an attack of a combined army of the Rokkaku and the Hosokawa. In 1525, the remnants of the Kuri clan took refuge on this hill, but were destroyed and the castle was abandoned.
Field Notes
I visited this site after Omi-Hachiman castle. I rented a bicycle from the station. The north trail to the castle is indicated by a panel and a stone marker. After some stairs, the trail is indicated by a black and yellow rope, which came in handy at some points. After seeing some pictures on some other sites, I'm sure now that I saw 2 kuruwa and a deep horikiri. Since the site isn't well maintained and completely overgrown, the rope disappeared under fallen trees and I couldn't find it anymore. At that point, I decided to go back.
