History

The castle was originally built by the Chiba clan in the 14th Century. The early history is a bit unclear but by the late Sengoku Period it was the main castle of the Ida Clan, a branch of the Chiba. The Ida were aligned with the Hojo and sent most of their forces to Odawara to help with the defense of Odawara. When Sakata Castle was attacked by Hideyoshi's forces they easily surrendered and Sakata Castle was abandoned.

Field Notes

Parts of the castle ruin are now a plum tree plantation. Don't think you've left the castle ruin but follow the trail along the side to see further earthworks and entrances. It looks like they have a plum festival here in the spring so that may be a good time to visit.
