In 2009, when making preparations to repair the lower stone wall, the upper stone wall was discovered too. Since it looks over the palace grounds it is thought that this path was used only used by the daimyo and a few select retainers. I think it may have been intentionally left off maps if it were used as a secret route or to prevent spies or others form gaining entrance to the castle grounds. Since each domain had to turnover maps of their castles to the Tokugawa, it makes sense that people may have wanted to keep some secrets. | |||
