The area was frequently fought over between the Hojo, Uesugi and Takeda. It is thought that it finally came under the control of the Hojo but was abandoned when the Hojo fell to Hideyoshi in 1590.

A surprisingly interesting site. There are many more ruins there than I had imagined and you can see most of the structure of the castle. It is not far from Zen Castle so they can be easily visited together.

History

The Yamagami clan were a branch of the Ashikaga who settled here in the 14th C. Yamagami Castle started as a fortified home around that time, but was likely built into the castle we see today in the early 1500's. In 1555, when Yamagami Dokyu was lord of the castle, the Yamagami fell to incursions by Hojo Ujiyasu. The castle was retaken by Uesugi Kenshin who put it under the control of the Oogo clan. The area was frequently fought over between the Hojo, Uesugi and Takeda. It is thought that it finally came under the control of the Hojo but was abandoned when the Hojo fell to Hideyoshi in 1590.

Field Notes

A surprisingly interesting site. There are many more ruins there than I had imagined and you can see most of the structure of the castle. It is not far from Zen Castle so they can be easily visited together.
