The Uchida Residence is one of two samurai homes open to the public in the former castle town of Mizusawa, and the best preserved. The main structure, built in the 18th century, has a thatched roof and so too does the impressive main gate to the residence. The house is now surrounded by a garden. The shape of the house is an inverse "L" shape; the bottom of the "L" is the kitchen area with a section of dirt floor and then a section of wooden floorboards. The rest of the house is comfortably decked out in tatami matting. There is art to decorate the doors and walls, and hanging scrolls, altars, shelves in the tokonoma and such . There is a half-sized sliding segment of shōji allowing for a crawl space between two adjacent rooms too.
