History

Yamana Mochitoyo (Yamana Sozen) built Toyooka Castle as an extension of Konosumiyama Castle and placed one of his highest raking retainers, the Gakiya clan, in charge of it's defense. When the Yamana were defeated by Hideyoshi he made Miyabe Keijun the new lord of Toyooka Castle. Miyabe renovated the castle and started development of the castle town which would later become Toyooka City. In 1597 Sugihara Nagafusa became the new lord of the castle completing the renovations in 1600. In 1653 the castle was abandoned when Sugihara was transferred to another domain. The Toyooka Domain was re-established under Kyogoku Takamori in 1668 but it was not given "castle domain" level status so the Kyogoku built a smaller jinya fortification at the base of the mountain. See the Toyooka Jinya profile for details.
