History

It is said that Hōzōji-yakata was used during Takeda Shingen's invasion of Shinano as part of the assault on Fukashijō (Matsumoto Castle), but it is thought that it may have been built before that as a branch residence of the Nariai Clan, along with nearby Kamaenohaka Yakata, their main base likely being the Nariai Yakata. The Nariai were vassals of the Ogasawara, nominal rulers of Shinano Province.

It is a municipal designated historic site. The remains of embankments and moats can be traced around the perimeter of the temple.
