History
The Ota-yakata was the fortified residence of the Nishimaki Clan from the Kamakura Period onwards. The Nishimaki were local land-owners. The Ota-yakata had a "凸" layout and was surrouned by dorui (earthen embankments) for protection. During the Sengoku Period the Nishimaki built several mountain castles to retreat to in times of conflict. The closest to Ota-yakata are Azumi Nishimaki Castle, a yamajiro (mountaintop castle) and a satellite fortification known as Kameyama-toride (a "toride" is a small fort) (also Azumi Kameyama Castle). Today the site of the Ota-yakata is farmland and apple orchards.
