This is an interesting little site and would have been more enjoyable without the unexpected early snowfall. If you rent a bicycle from Namioka Station to go to Namioka Castle you might as well make that short trip to Takayashikidate too. It is well worth it.

History

Takayashikidate was an early fortified village (kango shuraku) that dates to the 11th C. It consists of a simple moat and earthen embankment surrounding the town and is further protected by a river and ravine on one side. The site was uncovered while building the highway that runs along side it in 1994. They shifted the course of the road to preserve the site which was designated a National Historic Site. That's a welcome change to the many sites that have been destroyed for roads and highways even recently! The site was just restored and opened up in 2019.
