Horikoshi Castle was a surprisingly great visit and one that definitely deserves more attention. Just 7 kilometers from Hirosaki Castle it is actually the original seat of the Tsugaru domain until Tsugaru Tamenobu built Hirosaki Castle. Some parts of Horikoshi Castle were reused at Hirosaki Castle.

History

The origins of a fortification on this site, likely date to 1336. Tsugaru Tamenobu also used this as an encampment for an attach on Ishikawa Castle in 1571. Tsugaru Tamenobu built this castle in 1594 and moved the Tsugaru's base from Oura Castle. It was found to be lacking in natural defenses so ended up being a rather short lived castle. The Tsugaru started to build Hirosaki Castle in 1609 and moved in 1611 abandoning Horikoshi Castle.

Some parts of Horikoshi Castle were reused at Hirosaki Castle. The castle was known from historical documents but was "rediscovered" in the 70's for roadwork on a nearby bypass. The site was added to the National Historical Site registration for Hirosaki Castle in 1985. The castle site has the Kumano Shrine in the Honmaru Bailey but was otherwise mostly undisturbed until recently. Excavations from 1998-2013 laid the groundwork for the restoration of the site that took place from 2012-2019. The site was fully completed and opened in April 2020. Could this be the latest fully restored castle site?
