Likewise, it would have been a great beachhead for Ota Dokan or the Hojo. The castle is a short bus ride from Ichikawa Station.

History

Konodai Castle was first built by Ota Dokan's brother Ote Suketada as a military base for Dokan's excursions into Chiba. It housed an army and had good access to Edo Castle for supplies and reinforcements. The castle offers commanding views of the river area to control traffic and movement out to sea as well as area supply routes. For this reason it was the focal point of battles between the Ota and Satomi and then Hojo and Satomi. After Tokugawa Ieyasu moved to Edo, he abandoned the castle specifically because it overlooked Edo Castle and could potentially be a threat the Chiba side of the river.

Field Notes

To be honest, there is not much to see here and most visitors won't even know it as a former castle site except for a couple small signs. For most people it will simply be Satomi Park. The earthen embankments you see in the photos are thought to have been embankments (dorui) of the castle. They even integrated kofun into the embankment network and there are 2 places thought to have been yagura (lookout tower) locations.
