Background

The Seri-gumi Yoshii Residence is probably equally well preserved on a par with the Isojima Residence. The house is private property but the owner does not live in it anymore. When it was protected as a Hikone City Historical Site, a survey of the house showed significant damage so it was faithfully restored as a late Edo Period ashigaru home.

It was open for a special exhibit when I visited in October 2021. The tours were conducted by city volunteers but when I visited the owner happened to drop by and gave a personal tour of the home (including the upstairs storage) and its history. He was very passionate about the history and the house itself so I truly hope it can be made open more regularly in the future.
