Takahashi-yakata is a fortified manor hall site in the Mitachi Township of Toyota Township; no ruins remain and the site is now a shrine, Washitori-jinja, and fields.
History
Takahashi-yakata was the fortified manor of the Takahashi Clan. It was constructed in the 13th century by Takahashi Yorisada, who was made lord of the manor by Minamoto Yoritomo with a fief valued at 8,000 kan. In 1506 Matsudaira Munetada annexed the manor and the manor hall was presumably destroyed or abandoned at that time. Subsequent flooding of the Yahagi River has destroyed or buried any ruins of the yakata.
The yakata’s earliest antecedent may have been a fortification called Hinamori-yakata used to suppress the proto-state of Koromo by the Yamato in ancient times. ‘Hinamori (夷守)’ literally means ‘protection from barbarians’, and the name is retained as the honourific appellation of Washitori-jinja (鷲取神社), a shrine which occupies site today. Furthermore, the ancient yakata was called mitachi (御館), which the township is named for (御立町).
