History

Inokuchijō was built by Suzuki Shigemasa, the second patriarch of the Asuke-Suzuki Clan, in the Sengoku period. A castellan called Toda Tadakatsu is also associated with the site. Inokuchijō like played a role in the defence of Asuke, though it is not considered one of the 'seven castles of Asuke', maybe because it is located further away from the town. For more information see Iimoriyamajō.

Field Notes

Inokuchijō is an okajiro (hilltop castle) ruin in Inokuchi Township, Toyota Municipality. Ruins are chiefly earthworks, including kuruwa (baileys), trenches and terracing carved into an independent hill in the valley. The layout is of two twin baileys with a large dry moat between them. The western bailey is groomed, and blossoming trees dotted the earthworks during my visit. The eastern bailey is overgrown with bamboo grasses.

Note: This Inokuchijō is in historical Kamo County (modern Toyota Municipality), not to be confused with Inokuchijō in historical Nukata County (modern Okazaki Municipality), both in historical Mikawa Province and modern Aichi Prefecture.
