History

The castle history is completely unknown. It is clearly a castle ruin with a leveled main bailey, horikiri and trenches. It seems to be in a good position to watch over the road and the valley below it so it was likely part of the network of fortifications built by Akechi Mitsuhide for the Tanba Campaigns, in particular for the siege of Yagami Castle. It is called Minami which means "south" and there is a Hatta Castle on the way to Sonobe too, but the name "South Hatta Castle" was probably more of a convenience since it is in the area called Hatta rather than being connected to the other Hatta Castle.

Field Notes

This is not something I would go out of my way to visit, but if you are in the area it is worth the quick hike up the hillside behind the highway to get to the castle ruins. I walked here from Habu Castle since I had well over an hour to the next bus and just caught the bus from the Hatta Bus Stop right in front of the castle ruins instead.
