Sakaki Jin'ya

Opposite Sakaki Station - where I alited en route to Katsuraojō - is a signboard marking the former existence of the Sakaki-jin'ya. According to the signboard, ishigaki (stone walls) can be found "on the eastern side", beneath the former site of the Inari shrine. I went around to make sure and, find

History

Sakaki was a hatamoto-ruled territory worth 5,000 koku, and the Sakaki-jin'ya was built in 1618 to be the administrative center of the domain. Itakura Shigetane, originally of Iwatsuki Domain, Musashi Province, was transferred here in 1682 after suffering a demotion, but his territory was nonetheless worth 50,000 koku. Shigetane petitioned the bakufu for the reinstatement of lost income, but instead his claims were split between his sons, Shigehiro and Shigenobu. In 1703, Itakura Shigehiro was transferred to a new territory and Sakaki reverted to its tenryō status. In 1754, Sakaki-jin'ya was subordinated to Nakano-jinya, Nakano Domain, becoming a branch jin'ya - which is pretty low down in the administrative apparatus. In 1759, Sakaki-jin'ya was abandoned, replaced with nearby Nakanojō-jin'ya to the south.

Opposite Sakaki Station - where I alited en route to Katsuraojō - is a signboard marking the former existence of the Sakaki-jin'ya. According to the signboard, ishigaki (stone walls) can be found "on the eastern side", beneath the former site of the Inari shrine. I went around to make sure and, finding the Inari shrine marker, it seems that it does indeed mean the ishigaki next to the signboard, but this does not look Edo Period! So I'm highly sceptical. I went around the neighbourhood to search for anything that could be remotely indicative of the former jin'ya. I did find some much nicer ishigaki supporting a random house, though this is probably also not so old, as well as some old houses. I found also a public well.
