History

The Numata Clan from Kozuke (modern day Gunma Prefecture) were given a new post here by the Ashikaga Takauji in 1351. They moved here and ruled over the region and especially watched over the important trade route. The castle was renovated in likely renovated around 1558 in reaction to growing tensions in the region. The Numata clan remained here until they fell to Matsumiya Kiyonaga, an ally of Takeda Shingen, in 1569. Matsumiya may have used the castle but it was abandoned when Niwa Nagahide took control in 1584.

Field Notes

See also Numatashi Dejiro for a nearby satellite fortification.

Kumagawa Castle has the distinction of being one of the easiest Sengoku Period mountain castles that anyone can easily enjoy without braving disappearing trails, wild animals, bugs or needing any equipment like good shoes or trekking poles. It is also well maintained so it can even be visited in the summer, as I did.

The Kumagawa district is an amazing little historic site with relics from the early Sengoku Period through to the end of the Edo Period all in one small town that can be visited in a single day. The Jinya Town or Castle Town also served as a post town and trading town during the Edo Period. With many original merchant residences and shops you can enjoy the Edo Period atmosphere and especially enjoy a break at one of the many restaurants or cafes in one of the converted shops or warehouses.
