History

Minagawa-jin'ya was built by Minagawa Hirotaka in 1698. Hirotaka, a hatamoto (bannerman), had worked in Hitachi Province to eleviate water shortages with irrigation projects. For his meritorious deeds he was later in life granted a fief in Tôtōmi Province valued at about 5,000 koku, which his descendents lorded until the abolition of feudalism in 1871 (though before that their holdings were reduced to 3,000 koku in 1852).

This site is Minagawa-jin'ya in Tôtōmi Province (part of modern day Shizuoka Pref.), not to be confused with Minagawa-jin'ya in Shimotsuke Province (Tochigi Pref.).
