History
During the expansion of Kaneishi Castle, it was decided to built a new castle as main residence of the Sou family. This became the Sajikihara Castle, and was finished in 1678. It was used until the Meiji restoration. These days, the Japanese Self Defense Force garrison occupies the site. A Kouraimon was destroyed by a typhoon in 1987. It was reconstructed in front of the Tsushima Municipal Izuhara Kindergarten. Almost in front of this gate, stands a nagayamon (row-gatehouse). It was the gate of the residence of the Ujie family, main retainers of the Sou family. The stone walls around the houses in this ward are still a remembrance of the Edo period.
Field Notes
I took a plane to Tsushima island, and from the airport a taxi to my hotel, in Izuhara ward. The Kouraimon of this castle was about 10 min walking from my hotel. I didn't walk to the Japanese Self Defense Force garrison, so I didn't see the remnants of the stone walls there. The townscape has several stone walls and gates, still from the Edo period. The Ujie family (first retainer of the Sou clan) nagayamon (row-gatehouse), is almost in front of the Kouraimon.
