File:Shinpu1.jpgMost people go straight up the steps here to get to the Honmaru bailey but I would recommend taking the road to the left.Typical entrance to the Honmaru but go by the path to the left.1035.73595, 138.427false

File:Shinpu22.jpgThe Otemon Main Gate has an incredibly complex structure. There is an umadashi entrance (half moon bailey) around the main gate, but each entrance to the umadashi also has a masugata box gate.First masugata box gate of the Otemon Gate.3535.73322, 138.427false

File:Shinpu29.jpgDon't miss this structure at the base of the mountain before you cross the road to the castle. This was a moat around the castle but since the land is not even, these retaining walls were built into it to hold back water. See the illustrated map for more details.Remains of a water moat and retaining walls80035.73656, 138.42734false

File:Shinpu14.jpgOne of the big differences between "hiking" and "visiting castles" is that visiting mountaintop castles and other castle ruins in the summer can be very difficult. The weeds are much thicker than well worn hiking trails and you may see these big spiders very frequently. They're not poisonous but they're huge and their webs are huge and very difficult to avoid. On this day I probably spent more time avoiding spider webs than looking for castle ruins.Big spider. These are everywhere in the summer.99535.73465, 138.42378false
