Description This is a reconstruction of a Heian Period (794-1185) building that was discovered on this site. The floor is actually set partially into the ground. Archeological evidence shows that this was probably a smoke signal station. In ancient days they used smoke signals to relay information to and from the provinces. An experiment done several years ago in western Japan showed that messages could be relayed via smoke signals almost as fast as a shinkansen can travel between the same locations.
