Description | This is the Otemon (main gate) of Shiroishi-jo. Look carefully at the structure to see how well fortified it is. It's not a masugata but it is still a well fortified and effective gate. First, the gate itself is a strongly built two story gate. Second, in order to enter the gate you must walk up a steep incline that narrows as it rises. At the top is a wider area right before the gate and the opening to the gate is offset to the right. An attacking enemy would get congested in the open area in front of the entrance where it is very easy for the defenders to attack with arrows and rifles from above. The holes in the wall were built specifically for rifles or bows. |
