Very little remains of this 'bait' castle (see history). It's easy to combine a visit to this site when visiting Miyajima. A little shrine is on the grounds now.

History

The castle was built by Mōri Motonari in 1555 on the island of Miyajima. It was meant as a bait to attack the forces of Sue Harutaka. Sue took the bait in september 1555. He took the castle with overwhelming forces. Mōri Motonari, who was on the mainland during Sue's attack, and his allies then maneuvered into position. He retook the castle. This is known as the battle of Miyajima. Since the castle was meant as a bait from the onset, it was probably abandoned after the battle.
