Description | This is a koshi guruwa of the Ninomaru Bailey. Koshi guruwa were small bailey like structures attached to a main bailey but vertically offset form the main bailey. It is a way to increase the flat surface area of the castle but vertically offsetting it slightly provides some natural defense with a natural wall on one side. Sengoku Period mountaintop castle make heavy use of koshi guruwa. Look at any drawing or an old mountaintop castle and you'll see many of them scattered around the mountainside. |
