Just across the river from Fukuchiyama Castle you'll find Izaki Castle atop a small hill with great views of the surrounding area. This castle is often considered an afterthought for people in Fukuchiyama with some extra time, but after visiting myself I think it strongly deserves more attention.

History

The lord of the castle was Shiomi Toshikatsu, the third son of Shiomi Yorikatsu, lord of Yokoyama Castle. The wide baileys likely served as an encampment for a large number of troops. When Akechi Mitsuhide invaded the Tamba Region in 1579, Toshikatsu set fire to the castle and fled after the fall of Yokoyama Castle.

Field Notes

Just across the river from Fukuchiyama Castle you'll find Izaki Castle atop a small hill with great views of the surrounding area. This castle is often considered an afterthought for people in Fukuchiyama with some extra time, but after visiting myself I think it strongly deserves more attention. This is a marvelous site with concentric baileys going up the hillside, commanding views of the river plain and great trenches and embankments that have been well preserved. They've cleared enough trees and preserve it as both a park and an historical site.
