History

Shobata Castle was likely founded by Nobunaga's grandfather Oda Nobusada. Nobunaga himself is thought to have been born here. The castle deftly made use of natural rivers for its defense, but the castle eventually fell into disuse when Nobuhide took control of Nagoya Castle and moved his main base there.

Chris Glenn has already published a fantastic article on Shobata Castle so at the risk of plagiarizing his great work, just go read it over there. Shobata Castle, Birthplace of Oda Nobunaga

Field Notes

The diorama is in an enclosure just outside the Shobata Station and is definitely one of the better models I've seen. The castle is roughly a ten minute walk away. This is probably the only castle where I've taken more photos of the diorama than the castle site itself. Despite some potential historical importance it is hard to recommend this site to any but the most die hard fans. I dropped by on the first day of a weekend trip to Nagoya but unfortunately it rained all the next 2 days so this was the only castle I ended up visiting on the trip.
