Besides the reconstructed gate (1983), there are a few signs posting the locations of former gates and the honmaru. The majority of the castle area has been converted to public facilities, a common fate for many former castle grounds.

History

It is not well understood exactly when or by whom Tatebayashi castle was constructed. The most likely sources place it around the 1550's but some legends go back to the 1470's. During this earliest time, the castle was also controlled by the Nagao and the Hojo until Tokugawa Ieyasu took control of Kanto in 1590 and placed Sakakibara Yasumasa in control.

Tatebayashi Castle was valued for its ability to control the Tonegawa River area and was the home of the top controlling families of the Tokugawa government until it was abandoned. In 1874, a fire destroyed more than half of the castle buildings. The fifth Shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, was also the lord of Tatebayashi Castle from 1661-1680 although he actually resided in Edo (Tokyo) throughout.
