Shimoyama Yakata
Shimoyama-yakata is a medieval yakata site not far below Hyakusaijiō. Now part of a quaint village, I found no ruins or marker here (dangling participle).
History
Shimoyama-yakata was part of a series of fortfications at the foot of the Hyakusaijijō temple-castle mount. They may predate Hyakusaiji Castle. The Ōmi-no-Kuni Komazarae (淡海国木間攫), found in the Hikone Kyūki Shūsei (彦根旧記集成), mentions Masujima Sanai, a magistrate appointed by Rokkaku, as a castellan.
In addition to the Shimoyama-yakata there is a Shimoyamajō and a Shimoyamamoto-yakata / Shimoyamahonjō. The latter indicates a main residence and the former a better fortified redoubt area on higher terrain. The site of what is now Hiyoshi-jinja is thought to be that of Shimoyamajō.
