History

The Kisotono-yashiki is said to have been a residence of Kiso Yoshinaka, but how many of those there are! It's associated with a sort of fallen warrior legend, which must always be taken per grano salis. But archaelogical investigations here have unearthed evidence of a mansion, and so some lord definitely resided here at some point. Likely it was the kyokan (living area) of Asahijō on the hill above. It seems the lord of the manor was the son of the lord of Koshibamijō, Koshibami Miyauchi. It is said that the mountain village of Hirashiba developed around the yashiki. I went there and saw that the village is now abandoned; who will keep its ochiudo densetsu (legends of fallen warriors) alive?

Field Notes

Kisotono-yashiki was another on-the-way site, on the way to Minochi-Asahijō. By now I was in the foothills overlooking Nagano and out of the city itself. The general layout of the hall should've been visible, but there is now some modern thing - I don't even know what - which has been built on the site very recently, obliterating a portion of it. This is disappointing. It is a reminder that minor sites, even in rural areas, are at constant risk.
