History

Shiojiri-jin'ya was built in 1725 as the centre of a tenryō (Shogunal territory) valued at 53,000 koku. Due to shifting domain borders Shiojiri-jin'ya was short-lived, abolished in 1744 after the territory was ceded to Matsumoto Domain. The first Daikan (magistrate) was Muro Tomiaki. He died in 1740 and was replaced by Yamamoto Chikayuki. Magistrate Yamamoto attempted to increase his territory's holding by 30,000 koku by developing the Kikyōgahara area (now the site of many vineyards), but he was dismissed from his post in 1743.

The Shiojiri-jin'ya is located in the centre of what was formerly Shiojiri-juku, an important shukuba (post town) along the Nakasendō (Interior Mountain Route). Little remains of the post town today and the jin'ya, along with the honjin and wakihonjin, are long gone. Information boards and marker stones have been erected on the site, which is now a saké brewery with traditional architecture. I think I stumbled across a crime scene here because there was a police cordon tape and a mess of tarpaulin sheeting at the brewery. Whilst I was reading the information board someone came along with a professional cemera and took some surreptitious shots; somehow I don't think he was interested in the history or architecture. Shiojiri is interesting in that the original centre of the settlement was here on the outskirts of the modern town which developed around the railway station. Nonetheless, little, apart from a few structures, has been spared by modernity in the "Nakamachi".
