Field Notes

Chamachi-daiba was a daiba (gun emplacement) in the Chamachi (‘Tea District’) of Tsuruga. Of the daiba, built by Obama Domai to protect the port of Tsuruga, no ruins remain, but there is a large stone lantern which was used as a beacon for fishermen. The site is adjacent to a harbor beneath the Great Tsuruga Bay Bridge (the bridge is very tall despite its short span).
