Yonefukuchousha Yashiki
I was going to ignore this fortified residence site in Tsukude Village, Shinshiro Municipality, but then I saw a map and information about it in the village museum. The explanation mentioned ‘dorui-ato’. Dorui is earthen ramparts but ‘ato’ may mean ‘ruins’, or it may simply mean ‘former of site of’
History
The Yonefuku Clan ruled Tsukude from the 8th century, predating the Okudaira Clan, and the Yonefukuchōsha-yashiki was their main base, though the timeline is not clear. ‘Chōsha’ refers to a local strong man or wealthy landowner. The yashiki also contained a saké brewery and a blacksmith, and the Yonefuku Clan is also thought to have been involved in breeding horses. It is speculated that Yamazaki Takamoto defeated the Yonefuku in the late 14th century, clearing the way for Okudaira Sadatoshi to relocate to Tsukude. Descendants of the Yonefuku, perhaps intermarried with the Okudaira, may have helped construct Kawajiri Castle in 1424.
Field Notes
I was going to ignore this fortified residence site in Tsukude Village, Shinshiro Municipality, but then I saw a map and information about it in the village museum. The explanation mentioned ‘dorui-ato’. Dorui is earthen ramparts but ‘ato’ may mean ‘ruins’, or it may simply mean ‘former of site of’ with nothing to see. I looked at a satellite image, compared it to a diagram showing the yashiki’s layout overlaid on a modern map, and noticed a tuft of green alongside a house. That, I said, was the dorui. I located this dorui and took a picture then. It looks like it could be dorui! So that was nice. There are other traces of the yashiki here and there, but I was running out of time so I checked out just this chunk of dorui.
