Yamada-yakata is a fortified manor hall site in the village of Yamada in the Nakayama area of Takayama Rural Municipality, historical Takai County. It is now a temple, Shinpōji. Although no clear ruins remain, a bird's eye view of the site reveals the layout of the yakata, particularly in the north

History

Yamada-yakata was the fortified manor hall of the Yamada Clan in the early 15th century. The Yamada were vassals of the Takanashi Clan. It is thought that the Yamada may have been the original builders of Masugatajō on the mountain above, and so the Yamada-yakata was likely paired with the fort and used as a kyokan (residential area) in a jōkan arrangement wherein a manor hall is protected by a fortified mountain redoubt. It seems that the Yamada were pushed out by the Hara Clan, and that the Takanashi Clan later took over the territory directly, and built a new mansion in the west of the village (Yamada-yakata is more in the centre of Yamada village). Though this yakata may have also have been retained as a residence, it later became a temple, Shinpōji.

Field Notes

Yamada-yakata is a fortified manor hall site in the village of Yamada in the Nakayama area of Takayama Rural Municipality, historical Takai County. It is now a temple, Shinpōji. Although no clear ruins remain, a bird's eye view of the site reveals the layout of the yakata, particularly in the north and west. Walking around the temple perimeter and following the row of trees there, it becomes evident where the yakata's earthen ramparts and moat once ran.
