History

Tenjin'yama-jinsho was an encampment site during the siege of Nagashino Castle in 1575. Tenjin'yama-jinsho was the closest encampment to the besieged Tokugawa stronghold, overlooking it on a small hill. It stood between Nagashinojō and Iōji-toride where Takeda Katsuyori was encamped. Tenjin'yama-jinsho was the main defensive line between Nagashinojō and the Takeda command centre; it could be considered a satellite fortification of Iōji-toride. Tenjin'yama-jinsho hosted 2,000 men. Ichijō Nobutatsu, Tsuchiya Masatsugu†, Sanada Nobutsuna† and other commanders were encamped at Tenjin'yama-jinsho.

Tenjin'yama-jinsho is an encampment site in Nagashino Township, Shinshiro Municipality. The site is now a shrine and forest. There is an explanatory board about the battle of Nagashino on the hill. The area of the hill with the shrine is flattened, and this area looked down on Nagashino Castle, so there was probably a look-out platform or tower there, I thought. There is a hollow behind the hill where there is now a cemetery, and I supposed most of the men where encamped in this area in the shadow of the hill. At the foot of the hill there is a community centre calling itself 'Honjin' after Takeda Katsuyori's encampment, but it is actually closer to the site of Tenjin'yama-jinsho.
