Field Notes

Nakahokkyūjō is a yamajiro (mountaintop castle) ruin on a small ridge terminus in Nakai Township, Okazaki Municipality. I went into the valley area where there are lots of old stone-piled retaining walls put there by farmers generations ago. From the valley I ascended onto the ridge and walked to the tip. Here there was a flattened area with some terracing, and an old hōkyōintō, a type of cenotaph. This is the site of Nakahokkyūjō. The hilltop does appear to have been worked by medieval hands, but specific fortification features are difficult to delineate.
