Himeji Castle: Nishi Kotenshu Special Exhibition 姫路城:西小天守特別公開 This February the special exhibit for Himeji Castle is the Nishi Kotenshu (starting from pic #22). That's the small tower or smaller keep you see on the immediate front left of the main keep in the below photo. This was the first time this part of the main keep complex has ever been opened to the public. One of the most interesting parts of these special exhibitions is actually less about the interiors as it is looking out from them. What can you see? What are the angles of fire? With so much of Himeji Castle complete, this is really the only castle where you can get such first hand views of the strategic importance of the yagura and to see with your own eyes what defenders in these yagura might have defended and why. In addition to the Nishi Kotenshu, I've thrown in a few photos from the inside of the castle, a mini tour on way to the Nishi Kotenshu. I also included some photos highlighting the often overlooked Ru-no-mon gate. If you follow the signs after leaving the Bizen Maru and passing through the Nu-no-mon gate you are likely to just pass by this amazing little uzumimon (buried gate) and continue on to the Ninomaru compound. Kokuin fans especially please be sure to follow through to these photos! To round out the day, I dropped by the Hyogo Prefectural History Museum to see if they had any displays about the castle. They had a few, but for a place like Himeji I feel they could have done more too. The castle itself is a kind of living museum but I've seen small reconstructioned tenshu with better historical displays and information. Also, for a prefectural museum there are hundreds of worthy sites in Hyogo tha could make an amazing Castles of Hyogo exhibition room.
