History

The castle was probably built by Takayama Ukon in 1585 under the orders of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but there is also a story that Bessho Yoshichika built a satellite fortification of Miki Castle here for the Battle of Miki Castle. The castle sits at a strategic point near where the Akashi River runs into the ocean and along the San'yo Highway. In 1587 when Hideyoshi expelled the Christians, the Takayama Ukon was forced to give up his landholdings as a Christian Daimyo because he would not renounce his faith.

After the Battle of Sekigahara, Funage Castle was made a satellite castle of Himeji Castle but was eventually abandoned under the One Castle per Domain edict. When nearby Akashi Castle was built in 1619, the remaining materials were used to help build Akashi Castle.

Field Notes

There is really nothing here to see but I had to drop by because of the connection to Akashi Castle and as the original site of the Oda Residence Gate outside Akashi Castle. The small wooded area in the pictures below has a little shrine with a stone pillar that says Funage Castle but I could not find a way to get there without going through the rice field.
