Onabuchi Castle

For the time period it is quite rare to have a flatland castle and one that used water moats so extensively in the Kanto Region. For that alone it is a worthwhile trip. The outline of the castle is well preserved as well as the water moat but not much else.

History

The early history of this castle is unknown. It first appears in history when it was captured by Uesugi Kenshin in 1561. The castle was later captured by Yokoze Shigakatsu, lord of Yaba Castle, who put it under the control of Numata Kageyoshi. That put the castle into Hojo hands, so Uesugi Kenshin attacked and recaptured the castle 1574. In 1576, it was taken by the Yura from Kanayama Castle who were also allied with the Hojo. By this time, the Uesugi control of the area was waning and the castle remained under the Hojo until they were defeated in 1590 and the castle was abandoned.
