History

Hatakeyama Rokurō built Tsutsumihonjijō in the middle 14th century, no later than 1364. The Hatakeyama Clan served as governors of Owari and supported the Ashikaga Shogunate. Tsutsumihonjijō was the centre of a fief based around the township of Tsutsumi. The fort was abandoned around 1467. The shrine dedicated to Hachiman, founded by Hatakeyama Rokurō, can still be found on the site of the hilltop fort today.

In the early 17th century, the area beneath the fort mount was used as an 'ochaya' by Tokugawa Ieyasu and other early Edo shoguns. An 'ochaya' in this context was an inn or safehouse used by the Tokugawa shoguns en route between Edo and Kyōto.

Field Notes

Tsutsumihonjijō is an okajiro (hilltop castle) site in Tsutsumi Township, Toyota Municipality. No clear ruins remain, and the site is now a shrine to Hachiman. There is a small marker for the castle next to the stairs leading up to the shrine hall. The flattened area around the shrine hall is presumably where the fort's main bailey once was. There are two hills neighbouring each other in Tsutsumi which both have shrines to Hachiman atop; the site of Tsutsumihonjijō is the western hill.
