| Description | Kyooji Temple. Doesn't the building in the front look like a castle yagura? Castle defenses were not only built up by the stone walls and yagura. The town around a castle also played an important role in the castle defense. In particular, the placement of samurai homes and temples formed a part of this network of defenses. You'll notice a lot of temples around the fringes of the Izushi town. In particular, the 3 temples featured here each sit on one of the major roads through the town and could have been used as a fortress should the need arise. |
